Richard W. Gibney, Jr., 87, of Sterling, MA, passed away May 17, 2026, at home surrounded by his family after a battle with cancer. He was known to family and friends as “Bud”, “Buddy”, or “Dick”, and most affectionately as Dad or Grandpa.
Bud was born in Worcester, MA, to Richard “Bud” Gibney, Sr., and Frances C. (Schroeder). He attended St. John’s and St. Peter High schools as well as Wentworth Institute of Technology. He spent many years working in the valve industry, eventually retiring from Smith Valve Corporation in Westboro. He then went to work for his father, “Bud”, and his brother, “Billy”, at Gibney’s Sporting Goods on Main Street, Worcester. There, he ensured the pickup, care, and delivery of sporting goods equipment and uniforms for countless high schools, colleges, and leagues over the years, making many friends along the way. Due to cancer, he retired in 2025.
Besides his family, Bud loved watching sports, especially the Patriots and Red Sox. He enjoyed the company of many dogs over the years. He also loved working on his home property, where he lived for the past 43 years. He was often seen simply sitting in his backyard, just taking in the lovely pastoral view. He was known to make lasting friends wherever he went. He was a proud supporter of Veterans and Law Enforcement.
He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife, Gloria Gibney (Paradis) of 41 years, 2 daughters - Anne Gibney and her husband Tom Bailey of Holden, and Mary Gibney of South Yarmouth, and a son - Richard “Buddy” Gibney, III of Worcester, and his canine companion, Eddie. He also leaves behind his sister Helen and her husband Bill Fairbanks of Grafton, his brother William “Billy” Gibney and wife Mickey of Auburn, along with 3 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, as well as many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Massad, and his longtime friend Phil Helle.
The family thanks everyone for their prayers and support, as well as the care provided by VNA Hospice Care.
Friends and relatives are invited to calling hours on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 from 4pm to 6pm followed by a short funeral service at Fay Brothers Life Celebration Home located at 1 West Boylston St. in West Boylston. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund or the Wounded Warrior Project Project.
