WEST BOYLSTON, MA
Richard Charles Richie, 93, a longtime time resident of Northborough, died Saturday, June 5, 2021 in Bangor, Maine. Richard had recently moved to Maine to be closer to his son and family due to his declining health.
Dick leaves behind his son, Dr. Peter J. Richie and his wife Jean; six grandchildren: Dr. Jessica M. Remington and her husband Steven, Matthew C. Richie and his wife Jazmin, Aaron A. Richie and his wife Elizabeth, Nathaniel J. Richie, Samuel P. Richie, and Joshua S. Richie. He also leaves behind ten great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Vivian M. (Knipe) Richie who died in 2012; two brothers and three sisters, Americo Ricci, his twin John P. Richie, Mary Challoner, Helen Carter and Edith Lawrence.
Dick, a son of the late Pietro and Albertina (Ghetti) Ricci was born in West Boylston, MA. He attended Worcester Boy's Trade School. During World War II, at the age of 17, Dick enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and served on board the USS Admiral W.L Capps (AP 121) troop transport. They served in the European theatre transporting U.S. troops and axis prisoners of war. They were later needed in the Pacific theatre serving in Okinawa and Japan.
After his military service, he worked for Pullman-Standard Car Manufacturing Company, Reed-Prentice, and then Cincinnati Milacron Heald Machine division, where he worked for 35 years. Dick did extensive traveling in the U.S. and Europe for the Heald Machine division, where he taught programming for the machining centers in Worcester and in Romania. After retiring, he worked for H.C. Hook Co. as a manufacturer's representative. Dick and Vivian later built a winter home in Hobe Sound, Florida which they enjoyed for 23 years.
