A beautiful man left for home to be with his Heavenly Father. Robert S. DeMaio, Sr. of Worcester passed away on Sunday, May 1 at home surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. DeMaio is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary E. (Reidy) DeMaio; two sons, Robert S. DeMaio, Jr. and Sue Benoit of Southbridge and Anthony J. DeMaio and his wife Laurie of North Brookfield; three daughters, Darlene F. Larsen and her husband Alan of Northport, FL, Lorraine A. Walsh and her husband David Jr. of West Brookfield and Theresa A. DeMaio-McGuiness and her husband Brian McGuiness of Worcester; ten grandchildren, Nicholas, David, Erin, Felicia, Maggie, David, Amanda, Anthony, Katie and Caitlin; two great-grandchildren, Emmery and Ayla; four sisters, Mary Ann Noonan, Elizabeth Brosnihan, Rosalie Catino and Lorraine Murley and a brother, Anthony DeMaio. He was born in Worcester son of Anthony and Victoria (Cassella) DeMaio and graduated from Commerce High School where he was named All City in Baseball for two years. He served in the US Army from 1950 to 1952.
Robert worked for ten years for General Electric before becoming a Worcester Police Officer. He served the City of Worcester for 32 years, with honor and integrity. During that time he served as a traffic investigator, he became certified in Mass Criminal Justice Training, he served on the council of hit and run investigations and headed the hit and run division. He was a trustee for the Police Credit Union, the Police Relief Treasurer for the City of Worcester, a member of the Police Assoc. of Massachusetts and was an instructor for the Worcester Police Academy. He received the achievement award for outstanding service from the United Way.
Robert enjoyed being a Eucharistic Minister, Oil Painting and spending time with his grandchildren. Most importantly Robert was loved and will be deeply missed by his family.
The family would like to thank the nurses, hospice nurses and PCAs' of UMASS Memorial for their care and compassion.
A Funeral will be held Wednesday, May 4 from CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle St. with a Mass at 10 AM in Sacred Heart of Jesus and St. Catherine of Sweden Church, 600 Cambridge St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting Hours will be held Tuesday, May 3 from 4 to 8 PM at the funeral home.
