WORCESTER- Robert J. "Bob" Slein, Sr., 81, of Worcester, died Tuesday, September 8, in Notre Dame Long Term Care Center surrounded by his family. He leaves his wife of 19 years, Catherine (O'Halloran) Slein; a son, Robert J. Slein, Jr. and his wife Debra of Salem, NH; three daughters, Rosemary S. D'Aloia of Centerville, OH, Corinne L. Fluet and her husband Charles of Worcester, Theresa A. Coffey and her husband Michael of Rutland; sixteen grandchildren, Brendan, Connor and Colleen Slein, Matthew, Mitchell and Mark D'Aloia, Kristin, Kelley, Courtney and Kara Fluet, Colin and Patrick Coffey, Alexi and Carol Anne Provencal and Kevin and Ryan Gabbett. He also leaves two sisters, Rosemary A. Altieri of Whitinsville and Sister Maria (Alice) Slein of the Sisters of the Dominican Order in W. Springfield; several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his first wife, Cecile T. (Marois) Slein in 1971 and his second wife Marguerite W. (Mahoney) Slein in 1987 and two brothers, John J. and Richard O. Slein.
He was born in Worcester, the son of John J. and Mary A. (Healy) Slein, graduated from Classical High School and Worcester Junior College. He was a US Marine veteran of World War II. Bob worked for New England Telephone for 38 years retiring in 1988. He was a long time member of St. Charles Borromeo Church, Telephone Pioneers of America, Knights of Columbus Alhambra Council %2388 and was a volunteer for the Hope Lodge for ten years. He enjoyed skiing, his daily early morning walks, travelling and at one time he was very active in the Worcester Pee Wee Youth Hockey Association. He was a loving and devoted father but he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and attended many of their sports activities as their biggest fan. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff and hospice team at Notre Dame Long Term Care Center for the genuine care that they provided.
The funeral will be held on Friday, September 11 from CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle St. with a 10:00 AM Mass in St. Charles Borromeo Church, 341 June Street. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Visiting hours are Thursday, September 10 from 4:30-8 PM in the funeral home.
