SUTTON
Russell P. Hook, 98, of Boston Road in Sutton, died on Wednesday, March 23rd, after a short illness. He was born in Worcester to C. Philip and Elfreda V. (Larson) Hook and lived in Sutton for over 50 years. At the time of his death he was the oldest living resident of the town and was scheduled to receive its Boston Post cane. In his 99th year he was still walking daily in the Douglas State Forest and driving his own car.

He was a mechanical engineering graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Class of '34, and completed its school of industrial management. He worked in the Machine Tool Division of Norton Company for many years, rising to the position of Chief Engineer. He designed, built and serviced precision grinding machines and during World War II he provided field service for those machines at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, Curtiss-Wright Aircraft and other locations. He later worked on pin grinders and cam grinders for the automobile industry. He retired from Norton's successor firm, Warner & Swasey, in 1974.

Mr. Hook was an avid outdoorsman and a notable fisherman and hunter. He fished the lakes and streams of New England by land, ice and canoe, and took particular pleasure in pursuing the Atlantic salmon in Maine and New Brunswick. He also hunted throughout New England for deer, upland game and waterfowl. He was an excellent shot with both rifle and shotgun, a skilled fly fisherman and was intimately familiar with the woodlands of central and western Massachusetts as well as northern Maine.

Mr. Hook was predeceased by his loving wife of 56 years, Adele A. (Moberg) Hook, and his sister, Marion A. (Hook) Nyberg. He leaves his sister-in-law Elizabeth (Porath) Moberg of Gorham, ME, nephews Philip C. Nyberg and his wife (and Russell's principal caregiver) Patty of West Millbury, Peter H. Nyberg and his wife Sandra Dingee of Bristol, RI, and William K. Moberg, currently of Germany. He also leaves a niece, Christine N. Simonson and her husband Peter of Brunswick, ME, several grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and two great-grand-nephews. He was a long-time member of the National Rifle Association, the Miramichi Salmon Association, the Atlantic Salmon Federation, Trout Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited, and the Shop Brook Fishing Club, reflecting his lifelong interest in the outdoors. He was also a member of the Masonic Order, Morning Star Lodge, AF&AM.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 30, at the LINDQUIST LUNDIN FUNERAL HOME, 36 Butler Street, Worcester. Calling hours will precede the service between 10:00 and 11:00 AM. Burial will be later at the convenience of the family in the West Sutton Cemetery.
