Sean Michael Thomas McDermott, 63, of Worcester, passed peacefully at UMass Hospital on Saturday, September 19th, 2026.

He was born on February 5, 1963, in Worcester, the son of the late Marlyce V. McDermott Devine and Gerald V. McDermott.

In September 1986, 1LT Sean Michael McDermott, a distinguished graduate of UNH Army ROTC Class of 1985, and a UNH Presidential Scholar, was a proud medical platoon commander with the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), a premier U.S. Army unit based at Fort Drum, New York. The Division specialized in alpine and arctic warfare and is famous for its "Climb to Glory" motto, elite mountain training, and historic WWII roots. It was the ideal assignment for this brilliant, energetic, hard charging 1LT who was destined to “Climb to Glory” with the U.S. Army. But before the Army realized the contributions 1LT McDermott would inevitably make, tragedy struck. During a unit event, Sean had a life-changing accident. The quick action of 1LT McDermott’s well-trained medics saved his life, but drastically changed its trajectory.

We honor this extraordinary man’s climb to glory during the past 40 years, serving his country by inspiring those around him who are witness to his unwavering bravery and courage. We remember Sean for his keen intellect, leadership, charisma, charm, and most especially his sense of humor.

Sean’s dreams of serving in a line unit then attaining a medical degree at the Uniformed Services Health University to care for patriots who were sick and wounded, were tragically derailed. His climb to glory would take a different turn; but one that has had equal impact on all those around him.

Sean’s unmatched fortitude and passion to serve his country was a beacon of hope and inspiration to others. Despite his many personal challenges, Sean’s quick wit and generous humor continued to lift his fellow disabled veterans, their families and the dedicated caregivers who stand by our heroes. While his military service did not take a traditional form, Sean did indeed provide outstanding service to the country. He spread courage and bravery for over 40 years throughout Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the many VA hospitals and therapy centers where he had lived and received treatment. He gave the gift of himself to those who also endured unthinkable struggles because they pledged to serve their country. Just as he inspired many during this 40 yr tour of duty, Sean will continue to inspire all who knew him proudly honoring his lifelong commitment “This We’ll Defend”.

He was and ALWAYS will be remembered as the wonderful leader/friend who gave all he could to all he knew FOR ALL HIS LIFE.

Sean, we honor your remarkable life!

Sean leaves behind his beloved sisters, Elizabeth A. Corey and Karen M. McDermott with whom he shared both parents, as well as his half-siblings, Christopher T. McDermott and Kathleen J. McDermott, who shared his father, Gerald V. McDermott.
