Walter T. Barker, 95, of Worcester, passed away peacefully on April 19th, 2026, at Saint Francis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Worcester. Walter was the beloved husband of Vivian (Foster) Barker, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage until her passing in 2013.

Walter was born in Portland, Maine, the son of the late Gwendolyn (Allen) Barker and Lewis A. Barker. After graduating high school, he pursued his education at Dartmouth College, where he initially followed a pre-med track. Being unsure of this path, he decided to enlist and proudly serve his country in the United States Army where he was stationed in Germany. He was assigned to the CIA where he met his wife, Vivian, who was a civilian member of the CIA. It was love at first sight. They were married three weeks later and became a family with the birth of their daughter, Theresa, all while still residing in Germany. After discovering his passion for administration, Walter later earned a master’s degree in business with a focus on hospital administration. He went on to build a distinguished career in the medical field, most notably serving for many years as the hospital administrator and controller at Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick, Massachusetts. After retiring from the hospital, he remained active professionally, contributing his expertise in accounting to several startup technology companies.

Walter had a lifelong love of learning and embraced new ideas with enthusiasm. When Apple computers were first introduced, he eagerly enrolled in classes to learn computer languages, later applying those skills in his professional work. He found great joy in walking, photography, and history, and was a frequent visitor to the Worcester Art Museum and the New England Botanic Garden in Boylston.

Known for his warm and engaging personality, Walter had a gift for conversation and could connect with anyone he met. His kindness and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression—he was truly loved wherever he went.

He leaves behind many that will miss him dearly including his son Michael O. Barker and his wife, Lisa; his daughter Theresa (Barker) Allen and her husband, Roger; his grandson Michael Lewis Barker and his wife, Rebecca and great grandson Jordan Barker. He was predeceased by his wife, parents and longtime companion of 10 years, Ellen Messing.

All services are being held privately for the family.
