Walter M. Marcoux

December 31, 1917 — October 10, 2008

WORCESTER-Walter M. Marcoux died on October 10, 2008 after a brief illness. A long time resident of Worcester, he was born December 31, 1917 and attended local schools. In 1937, he married the former Doris Allen and was married for 68 years until her death in 2005. Together they had four children, three sons and a daughter.

He went to work in 1938 at Heald Machine Corporation as a machinist, and he stayed with them an unprecedented 45 years. A tremendous competitor, he played baseball in the industrial league. Known for his power hitting he was scouted by the late Joe Cronin of the Boston Red Sox.

Joining the Marine Corp. in 1944 he was assigned to a Dive Bomber Squadron as a gunner. He remained stateside and worked as a fitness instructor until the end of the war.

In 1946, he returned to Heald Machine, was given a Q top security clearance, and repaired sophisticated precision equipment located at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Rocky Flats (a former nuclear weapons facility) and Oak Ridge National Laboratories. Well known in his field, Walter traveled, as a consultant, after his retirement troubleshooting at the above facilities.

An avid weightlifter and bodybuilder, he won many major bodybuilding titles in local, state and regional competitions and was featured in several bodybuilding publications.

Civically minded throughout his life, in 1983 he became a volunteer for the Worcester Police Department. At the Police Department he provided tours and talks on the ramifications of drug abuse to almost 13,000 children and adults. He started a Neighborhood Crime Watch Program and was instrumental in eradicating a serious drug problem in the area. Recognized for his exemplary service he was awarded a Gold Shield in 2005 by the Worcester Police Department.

He is survived by his children, Carol Lauzier of Mansfield, Walter and his wife Maureen of Marco Island, FL, Earl and his wife Sharon of Ft. Myers, FL and Dennis and his wife Jackie of Worcester. He also leaves behind ten grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

A visiting hour will be held Tuesday, October 14 from 8:30 to 9:30 AM at CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle St. with a Mass at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Loreto Church, 37 Massasoit Rd. Interment will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Worcester Police Department, 9-11 Lincoln Square, Worcester, MA 01608.
