William F. Horgan

October 30, 1941 — March 14, 2024

Worcester

William F. Horgan, 82, of Worcester passed away in his home in the early morning hours of Thursday, March 14th after a period of declining health.

A lifelong Worcester resident, Bill, the oldest of four children of John and Helen Horgan, was born October 30, 1941, and was raised in the Grafton Hill area of Worcester. He attended both St. Stephen’s Grammar and High School and went on to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Worcester State College. Having tutored a special needs relative, he had a strong desire to work in the field of Special Education and earned a second Bachelor of Science Degree from Fitchburg State College in Special Education. He later received a Master of Science Degree in Education from Worcester State College. He was a proud member of the Air National Guard. Bill was employed by the Worcester Public Schools for over 40 years working in the Special Education Department in both a teaching and administrative capacity, but teaching was his true calling.

Family was everything to Bill. Once when asked about his goals in life, he stated among other things that his goal was to be as good of a husband to his wife as his father was to his mother and to follow his father’s example and to be the kind of father his dad had been to him and his siblings. He executed and achieved that. He was a wonderful husband, son, father, grandfather, and brother.

Bill is survived by his wife, Theresa E. (Scanlon) Horgan with whom he shared 57 wonderful years of marriage. He also leaves behind four of his five children, having been predeceased by his daughter, Mary E. Horgan, in 2021. He will be greatly missed by his family members; Thomas E. Horgan, his son and best friend, who together with Bill’s youngest daughter, Eileen H. Shea were his primary and devoted caretakers as well as his son John F. Horgan and oldest daughter Kathleen A. Horgan, all of Worcester. Bill deeply cherished and will be missed by his two grandchildren, Catherine V Horgan Shea, and Connor C. Shea, as well as his brother Rev. John E. Horgan of Shrewsbury and his sister, Mary R. O’Loughlin of Worcester.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. Karlin, Dr. Filiberti and Dr. Haas as well as the staff at St. Vincent’s Hospital and the Jewish Healthcare Center Hospice team for their excellent care, compassion and the kindness extended to both Bill and his family members.

The family has chosen Fay Brothers Life Celebration Home in West Boylston, MA to assist them with Bill’s services. Bill’s funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 19. 2024 at 10 o’clock at St. Christopher’s Parish, 950 West Boylston Street Worcester, MA 01606. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Worcester, MA.  Calling hours will be held from 8:30 AM until 9:30 AM on Tuesday at Fay Brothers Life Celebration Home at 1 West Boylston Street, West Boylston, MA 01583.
