William F. Lynch

WORCESTER-William Francis Lynch, 86, died peacefully with his family at his side Friday, May 14, 2010. He was the son of the late Katherine (Sullivan) and William Bartholomew Lynch.
He was raised in Worcester, MA, graduating from South High School and Boston State College. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II, served in Europe, and played a role in the liberation of Paris in 1944.

Mr. Lynch was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Joyce (Lockhart) Lynch. He is survived by his son William "Mac" Lynch and wife Deborah of Grafton; daughters Kathleen Wrobel and husband Michael of Hampton, NH, Bonnie Gallo and fianc%C3%A9 Edward Hogan of Worcester, MA.; Judith Heath and husband Gregory of Andover, MA. He is survived by eleven loving grandchildren: Mike, Caitlin, and Meredith Wrobel; Brian and his wife Mary and Scott Lynch; Tiffany and Brittany Gallo; Douglas, Colleen, Eric, and Sara Heath; one great grandson, Conor Lynch, and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of Katherine (Lynch) Swisher and the late Ann (Lynch) Helm.
Mr. Lynch was founder of the William F. Lynch Company where he served as President from 1949 to 1992; and subsequently acted as Chairman of the Board. He was an outstanding local and national leader in his industry, serving as President of the Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors of Massachusetts and President of the National Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors in 1977. Mr. Lynch served many years on PHCC Insurance Trust that was responsible for providing quality group insurance nationwide for plumbing and heating contractors. He also served two terms as President of the New England Mechanical Contractors Association in 1976 and in 1992 and served multiple terms as President of the Associated Subcontractors of Massachusetts during the 1980s. Mr. Lynch served on the Committee of Associated Subcontractors of Massachusetts that helped to rewrite the Massachusetts Sub Bidding Laws for construction in the 1950's and testified against corruption in public works projects to the Ward Commission in the late 1970's. During his career, he served as the chairman of the Pension Trustees, the Health and Welfare Trustees and the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee for Local 4 United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters - Worcester. In 1990, Local 4 honored Mr. Lynch for his distinguished service to the plumbing and heating industry.
As a member of the "greatest generation," Mr. Lynch was a prominent civic leader, serving several terms as an alderman for the City of Worcester and as President of the Board of Trustees of Worcester City Hospital for many years. For his service, the Emergency Room at Worcester City Hospital was named in his honor. Mr. Lynch received an honorary key to the City of Worcester in 1990 for his work at the hospital and his community service.
Mr. Lynch was a kind, generous and sincere man. He was a true gentleman, with a sharp intellect, a quick smile, a passion for life, and a deep respect for people and relationships. He enjoyed vacationing at his home in Hampton Beach, NH, traveling across the country and to Acapulco, Mexico, sharing good times with family, friends and colleagues. He displayed the utmost integrity in his professional and personal lives; he treasured his family and many friends. He will be fondly remembered and truly missed.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 18 from CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle Street, with a Mass at 10 AM at Blessed Sacrament Church, 551 Pleasant Street, Worcester. Burial will immediately follow at Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Visiting hours are Monday, May 17 from 4-8 PM in the funeral home.
