WORCESTER-Winifred C. "Winnie" Hayes, 94, of 51 Litchfield Street, died Saturday, September 17 in St. Francis Home. Miss Hayes was born in Worcester, the daughter of John and Mary Jane (Mills) Hayes. She was predeceased by her eight sisters, Margaret Hayes, Alice Terrill, Edna Cronin, Eleanor Foisy, all of Worcester, Lillian Marsh of Boston, Sister Mary Robert of Holyoke, Marion Hayes of Brooklyn, NY and Ruth Chestna of Oakham. She was also predeceased by two brothers, John Hayes of Pittsburgh, PA and Robert Hayes of Shrewsbury. She leaves many nieces and nephews including John Foisy and his wife Colleen, Lawrence Foisy and his wife Margaret, and Edward Terrill of Worcester.
Miss Hayes was born on the 4th of July and was a member of the first class of St. Peter's High School. She moved to Brooklyn, NY in 1930 and worked as an X-ray Technician. She lived in the Bay Ridge area with her sister Marion for nearly 60 years. Over the years she provided family and friends with many fond memories of visits to New York City.
For many years she belonged to a travel club and visited Spain, Norway, Germany, Italy, France and many other countries. She was an avid reader and lover of Broadway shows as well as a longtime Red Sox, Brooklyn Dodger and NY Mets fan.
Miss Hayes was a strong believer in her faith, family and friends. She continued to inspire others throughout her life with her strong will and compassion for others and will be fondly remembered. She was a long time parishioner at both St. Mark's in Brooklyn , NY and St. Peter's Parish in Worcester.
The funeral will be Wednesday, September 21 from CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle Street, with a Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Peter's Church, 931 Main Street. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday, September 20 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM in the funeral home.
